3. Idolatry as the primary Old Testament categorization of the religious Other

Although I appear to have covered a lot of ground in this chapter, in reality much of this has been ground clearing. It is only now towards the end that I am able to concentrate fully on my primary descriptor of the religious Other in the Old Testament. If Jewish monotheism’s affirmation of Yahweh’s ‘transcendent uniqueness’ is a historical articulation of the essential preservation of divine aseity and the Creator–creature distinction, then the ‘de-creational’ act of the blurring of this distinction and its consequences are articulated within the Old Testament category of idolatry and its strong prohibition. It needs to be remembered that while the focus of this prohibition often concerns the covenant community, this does not excuse the false religious expressions of those outside this covenant community, who universally remain related to Yahweh. Although I shall return again to this theme of idolatry in the final chapters, for now let me finish here by noting some of the distinctive Old Testament teaching on idols in terms of their composition, characteristics and consequences. For the final time I return to Chris Wright, whose exposition of idolatry is especially insightful.150
